鵜飼
“Ukai” is a traditional fishing method where an ujo (cormorant fisherman) controls cormorants to catch fish.
The history of “Gifu Nagara River Ukai” is ancient, dating back approximately 1300 years.
In the pitch-black darkness, as the brightly burning torches reflect on the river’s surface, the sight of the ujo in traditional attire working in harmony with the cormorants to catch sweetfish
captivates onlookers, drawing them into a mystical world.
「鵜飼」は鵜匠が鵜を操って魚を捕まえる伝統漁法です。
「ぎふ長良川の鵜飼」の歴史は古く、その始まりは約1300年前まで遡ります。
漆黒の闇の中、煌々と燃える篝火を川面に映して川を下りながら、伝統装束に身を包んだ鵜匠と鵜が一体となって鮎を追う様子は、見る人を幽玄の世界へと誘います。

Gifu Nagara River Ukai takes place on the Nagara River in Gifu Prefecture from May to October each year, attracting over 100,000 tourists annually.
Many people from both inside and outside Japan gather to witness this traditional fishing method up close and enjoy the enchanting scenery.
ぎふ長良川の鵜飼は、毎年5月から10月にかけて、岐阜県の長良川で行われ、毎年約10万人以上の観光客が訪れます。
この伝統的な漁法を間近で見るために国内外から多くの人々が集まり、幻想的な光景を楽しんでいます。
The cormorants used in Nagara River Ukai are mainly a species called “kawa-u.”
They are approximately 80-100 centimeters in length and weigh around 2-3 kilograms.
Adult cormorants have black feathers, while the young ones have a brownish color.
The lifespan of these cormorants is about 15-20 years.
長良川鵜飼で使用される鵜（う）は、主にカワウと呼ばれる種類の鵜です。
全長約80～100センチメートル、体重は約2～3キログラムで成鳥は黒色の羽を持ち、幼鳥は茶色っぽい色をしています。
鵜の寿命は約15～20年とされています。
The Ukai viewing boats are crafted without blueprints, relying on the skilled craftsmanship of artisans, so only about two boats are made each year.
鵜飼観覧船は設計図がなく、職人の熟練技で制作されているため、年間に2隻ほどしか造られません。
The ukai masters (ushou) of the Nagara River personally raise and care for the cormorants every day.
The relationship between the ushou and the cormorants is very close, built on a foundation of trust.
The ushou manage the cormorants’ health, feed them, and train them.
This traditional fishing method is cherished as part of Japan’s cultural heritage and is being carefully preserved and passed down to the next generation.
長良川鵜飼の鵜匠（うしょう）は、鵜を自ら飼育し、毎日世話をしています。
鵜匠と鵜の関係は非常に密接で、信頼関係が築かれています。
鵜匠は鵜の健康管理を行い、餌を与えたり、訓練をしたりします。
この伝統的な漁法は、日本の文化遺産として大切に守られ、次世代へと受け継がれています。
Access
The Ukai of Gifu Nagara River is about a 15-minute ride by bus or taxi from Gifu Station.
Reservations and Tickets
You can make reservations for the Ukai viewing boat online or by phone. Early reservations are recommended.
Notes
Ukai may be canceled due to weather conditions. While you can watch from the riverbank or a viewing boat, watching from the viewing boat is recommended.

鵜飼は天候により中止となる場合があります。
川岸や観覧船からの観覧が可能ですが、観覧船からの観覧がおすすめです。
